Shopping: New2U Thrift Shop

Thrift shopping at a good cost.
Hi everyone!

Thrift shopping is a more cost-saving way to get you the items you need PLUS it's like a treasure hunt - You'll never know what you might find!

Over in Waterloo Street, New2U Thrift Shop has been established since 2000. The shop is managed entirely by volunteers.

96 Waterloo Street
We had breakfast over at Harbourfront Bagus before heading over to the thrift shop. It opens on Weekdays from 10.30am to 2.30pm, so we had some time to kill after ending our night shift.

I had Yong Tau Foo for breakfast :p
The place was easy to find and accessible. We dropped off at Bras Basah MRT and it was about an 8 minutes of walk over.
The feeling of accomplishment when we found the Thrift Shop!
The building is what you would call 'rustic'
New2U 'sells' pre-loved items such as clothes, shoes, accessories, household items, decorative items, books, CDs, etc. Basically it's the place where you can find almost everything you have at home and more.

The special thing about thrift-shopping here is that, all the items are donated by people like all of us and the proceeds will go towards beneficiaries such as the Star Shelter and various SCWO Initiatives.

The shoes here are mostly for ladies.
Neatly arranged and organised racks of clothing.
The clothes section is the most extensive. You'll find everything sorted according to tops, dresses, jackets, pants and jeans.

Also, the items are sorted for Men or Women, so you can find everything easily. Here, you'll be able to find brands such as River Island, Banana Republic, Mango, Zara and other branded clothing for prices going as low as $1.
This guy keeps going on about Germany - He was so pleased when he found this travel guide book. :P
If shopping for clothing is not your type, you'll find preloved books, toys, and even jewellery here as well. We spent most of our time over at the Books and CDs section.

Who else remembers Feeding Frenzy? Such a good game! :D
Overall, it was an interesting place to visit and buy some stuffs. At the same time, it will help others in need, so why not? :) If thrift shopping or treasure hunting is your thing, or you would simply like to get some items as props for a dress up party (do people still do that?), this is definitely the place to go!

I think this is so cute!
Time moves in another dimension here and before long, we realised that it is already noon. I didn't manage to take much photos of the household items and toys as the room is quite filled up with people.

The SG50 Sale was on when we visited.
PLUS!! For every last 2 working days of the month, everything will go for HALF its price! If you're a student, you can also enjoy 1/2 price off items on every Tuesday. (This excludes books, toys and jewellery)

Pardon our sleepy eyes. Thanks to them for introducing me and the rest of us to this place!

If you're interested to volunteer or wish donate any of your items, find out more over HERE.

Shopping: Fassler 'Salmon' Warehouse

I'm a crazy lover of salmon.
He loves it too but usually I'll be the one having cravings for salmon. Be it salmon sashimi, salmon sushi, smoked salmon sandwiches or salmon steaks.
The mention of all these salmon is enough to make my mouth water. :D slurps

So it is a really enlightening moment when I found out that there's a place (or more like a warehouse) somewhere in Woodlands which sells salmon in various cuts - all cheaper than those you'll find outside! I woke the Mr extra early today to accompany me to Fassler Gourmet Pte Ltd :)

SALMON PARADISE HERE WE COME!

I spotted the blue building at 46 Woodlands Terrace. There are several rows of warehouses and most of them involves the production of food. You might have to check which of them are open to public. For today, we actually visited 4 different places but this post will just highlight Fassler - the Salmon Paradise. heee. :)

We reached the warehouse around 10.30am and the place is already packed with customers. That's a good sign! It means we're in a gooooood place.
Me - already beaming with excitement.

Some 'Jakt's hanging outside for customers. In case they can't stand the cold inside the Cold Room. I find the spelling really amusing.

The entrance to the Cold Room.

I used to work at McDonald's and I really hated the cold room we had. We had to get our chicken nuggets, fries and all the other frozen stocks from there. It was too freezing cold, I couldn't breathe or even see properly. And I always had vivid dramatic thoughts of being trapped inside the cold room. Freezing to death because maybe - I slipped and some boxes fell on me or maybe - because the door was always a little much too heavy that I always think that I'm unable to open it.

HAHA. I'll have a moment of silence for those claustrophobic memories.

The Cold Room wasn't as bad as I imagined! It was relatively big and there were many different items for you to choose from - salmon, tuna, swordfish, eel, prawns, mixed seafood (prawns and cuttlefish) and scallops among those that I can remember!

However, it is very cold so it was a bit difficult to stay in there for too long. We went for through the cold room twice, once just to see what is there for sale. We then got out to defrost ourselves and then entered again with our shopping basket. :)

 It's really cold in here.

The smoked salmon value pack (200g) is going for $9.90. This costs $12.95 at NTUC Fairprice!! There's also the Marinated Salmon Value Pack going for the same price.

This will especially be great for porridge or salmon chowder :)

Outside, there are trays of ready-to-eat salmon sashimi for sale. The small tray of 300g costs $13.50 while the large tray of 500g costs $22. Given that 5pcs of salmon sashimi outside costs about $6, this is really a great steal! You can also grab a tub of wasabi here for 60 cents and sashimi soy sauce for $3.30.

Mushrooms for sale. I even saw large portobello mushrooms if I'm not wrong.

Me and my buys :D Super happy. Oh ya! There were soups and chowders for sale too - I got the Broccoli & Cheese, Mushroom Soup and Seafood Chowder. :) Have yet to try them out, will probably have them for my lunch/dinner at work. (Mushroom soup turns out to be my fav!)

You can also order their party platter online HERE and there's a 20% discount if you self-collect these platters.

Let's tuck in! There are two layers of salmon sashimi slices. Totally worth the $13.50. I'm super happy. :)

You can view the full price list HERE - Updated as of 25th August 2014. The prices may fluctuate so do check back before you make a visit. Reminder: All purchases have to be made in cash :) It is also useful to note that because most of the items are sold in bulk, it's a good idea to plan your shopping list before coming.

HAVE FUN!

Shopping : Tai Sun 'Potato Chips' Warehouse

If you and your partner love shopping, this will be a unique shopping experience for the both of you. Read on to find out more...

Hari Raya is coming round the corner, in just like 2 more weeks? Time sure passed by fast this Ramadhan.

When you think of Hari Raya, you'll think of all the food (my favourite is the rendang and ketupat). And while the Chinese have their pineapple tarts and the Indians have their Murukku, the Malays have an assortment of kuih and baked cookies!
This year we're slightly lazy to bake, my dad bought these goodies at Giant Hypermarket in IMM.
However, we still felt there's something missing which we usually get every year. Something crispy, crunchy. Something that when once you pop, you can't stop.
You guess it right! Potato chips! Well we all know that these aren't exactly the healthiest snack, but... let's ALL be guilt-free together this time round.

So we headed off to get them. Not to NTUC, Sheng Siong or Giant, but to the warehouse factory itself. Located at Pandan Loop, Tai Sun sells snacks though not advertised to the public. And you can definitely get them at a cheaper price here!

Beautiful morning and it has just started to get busy.
It was such a lovely morning! The workers were really busy packing goods into their trucks and vans but everyone was still friendly and helpful. We were led to the warehouse shop which was further in. While the Mr is fascinated by forklifts and neat stacks of cartons, I went inside to Snack Paradise...

Neatly stacked potato chips flavours ensures efficient service as well. Plus this looks so beautiful to our OCD eyes. haha

As you can see, there are tons of potato chip flavours such as:
  • - Black Pepper
  • - Salted
  • - Barbeque
  • - Chilli
  • - Cheese
  • - Sour cream & Onion
  • - Salsa

The hot favourites for us are the Chilli and Sour Cream & Onion. You can either get your potato chip fix in a small bag, a carton or a biscuit tin.

It's not that big but it's definitely packed with lots of goodness
There are a variety of other snacks as well. You can see the decorative ketupats hanging from the ceiling... haha. Both of us were really impressed by the man who served us. Even in a warehouse, he's wearing proper shirt and pants. *thumbs up*

Happy with my loot :D

I only bought a tin because we're riding his bike home. Imagine me carrying multiple tins of these... That would be comical. A tin of any flavour like this costs $22. I'm sure the price had increased from the years back but still.. It's really cheap! Considering that a small bottle of any kuih Raya will cost that same amount or more. Hopefully these can last through the whole month of Hari Raya. (I doubt so.) Love how the sun shines in this photo :)

My healthy snack for work. And at $8.20 it is definitely a steal! NOMs

I also got this from the warehouse. Super lovely as a healthy snack. You could get it for your partner so they can munch on them in the office. It costs $9.80 in NTUC but only costs $8.20 direct from the warehouse! Great huh? :D (pssst. Nuts are known to be an alternative source of protein, and they also contain many valuable vitamins and minerals!)

So if you're thinking of a different kind of shopping date, why not visit Tai Sun soon? Get your snack fix and at the same time surprise your loved one by bringing them to a place they have never thought of going before.

It's also a good place to visit to grab your goodies before the festive season such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. And for those thinking of getting some for your workplace pantry, it's definitely a great deal with huge savings!

Have fun!
